Gideon J. Ball letters received, 1860-1861.

The collection contains five letters from General R. Patterson, Philadelphia; six letters from John H. Walker (lawyer at Erie, Pa. and member of Pa. legislature and senate), one each from Pa. governor (1861-1867) Andrew Gregg Curtin, Harrisburg, Pa., W.L. Schäffer (cashier, Girard Bank, Philadelphia), and Morton McMichael (Philadelphia lawyer, editor, Whig journalist), plus an unstamped envelope addressed to Ball. Patterson writes about his health, military strength on the eve of the Civil War, and suggestions to use Mexican War veterans to train soldiers. Walker writes about his candidacy for U.S. Senate, Pennsylvania politics, and opposition to House bills that affect roads in Erie. Curtin appoints Ball as his aide de camp. Schaffer urges Ball to repeal "all acts liable to reasonable objection" by the South to prevent the Civil War. McMichael introduces a captain who can assist with the military defense of Pennsylvania.
